Fruitcake (Genevieve's)

Dad's Original

1 cup butter
½ cup sugar
4 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp nutmeg
6 eggs
½ cup brandy
½ cup milk
1 pound raisins
½ pound citron
½ pound figs
½ pound dates
½ pound almonds
½ pound pecans
½ pound candied cherries and pineapple

Soak chopped fruit in brandy.  Sift and measure flour.  Take 1 cup flour and mix with nuts.  Add baking powder and nutmeg to flour and sift together.  Cream butter, add sugar and cream well.  Add eggs and dry ingredients alternating with milk.  Add floured nuts and brandy soaked fruit.  Mix thoroughly.  Bake in deep stemmed pan at 275º for 3 to 4 hours.  (2 hours if using 2 pans.)
