Pumpkin Bread

2/3 cup shortening                                        
2 tsp baking soda
2-2/3 cup sugar                                             
1-12 tsp salt
4 eggs                                                            
1 tsp cinnamon
1 can pumpkin                                               
1 tsp ground cloves
2/3 cup water                                                 
2/3 cups nuts, broken
3-1/3 cups flour                                             
2/3 cups raisins or dates
½ tsp baking powder

Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly; add eggs, pumpkin and water.  Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices; add to the pumpkin mixture.  Stir in nuts and raisins; pour into two greased loaf pans.  Bake at 350º for one hour.  An orange may be ground up, peel and all, and added to the mixture for variety and extra moistness.
